Woman in white

11/2022 Just outside the entrance to Medborgarplatsen subway

I took this photograph just by the exit of Medborgarplatsen T-bana (subway). There’s something about trying to capture a city in the pouring snow. Your hands are freezing, it’s hard to control the shutter speed and you’re struggling to find focus. Or perhaps, your camera is trying to find focus.

These days, if I’m out and about, I usually have a Lumix GX9 with me. It’s pretty much the smallest interchangeable lens camera that I could find for a decent price last year and I’ve had a lot of fun using it. I find it easy to carry around with me when I’m wandering around Täby, where I live, or central Stockholm. The one thing I don’t like about it is that it is not weather-sealed.

So, on this particular occasion, the bitter cold and snow blasting me in the face, I had to use my iPhone.

I’ve tweaked the file to edit the colours slightly, bringing out the warmer colours. Although it felt pretty much a whiteout at the time, there are colours to be seen if you look hard enough.

Yes, it’s a Stockholm city snapshot; however, I love the way the warm smile of the advertising board (It reads, “Hey, neighbour” and is promoting a housing company) contrasts the pedestrians.

I also have one question: Why is the woman wearing a pink beanie dressed practically in white. Or at least, they are summer colours!

I guess that’s the beauty of street photography – documenting and capturing stories about the world we live in
